Course Expectations: Stoughton High School

2005-2006: Foreign Language: Spanish I, II, & III

Mr. Thomas F. Silva, M. Ed.

  1. Course Description: This course will develop the four basis language skills; speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Students will communicate effectively with the teacher and other students in the class, Various aspects of Hispanic culture will be studied. A variety of exercises will be used on a daily basis incorporating the four basic skills. Active participation is essential.
  2. Course Objectives: It is expected that students will carry out basic communication tasks within the limits of their Spanish vocabulary and structure. The material presented in Spanish will prepare the students for additional language study.
  3. Classwork: Each student is expected to come to class prepared and seated by the sound of the bell. A notebook, textbook, and writing utensil are required every day. Students will be given a grade for participation. If a student comes to class unprepared, the resulting class participation grade for the day will be lowered. Class participation is an important part of learning a language. Classroom activities will be conducted in Spanish.
  4. Homework: Homework is assigned daily. It will consist of written work and/or nightly study. It is due at the beginning of the following class. Homework is expected to be neat and complete. No credit will be given for incomplete or late assignments. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for and complete all missed work due to absence. Late homework will be accepted for excused absences and must be made up by the time stipulated by Stoughton High School, "Number of days absent plus one day." Failure to due so will result in the grade of a zero.
  5. Grading: The term grade will be an average of all quizzes (20%), tests (40%), classwork (20%), and homework (20%). Tests are given at the end of each lesson, term and semester. Quizzes are given periodically and maybe unannounced. Cheating is not tolerated and will result in the grade of a zero. Students are evaluated on both oral and written skills. Essays will be given periodically and will count as a quiz grade. Projects will be given every term and will count as a test grade.

Extra Help & Make-up Work: Extra help and make up work sessions will be held after school. A student is expected to seek extra help due to absence. Students must adhere to Stoughton High Schools policy regarding make-up work. Failure to make-up missed assignments will result in the grade of a zero. It is the responsibility of the student to inquire about and complete all missing work. Extra help is available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school and by appointment for any other times.
